U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday the immediate termination of trade negotiations with Canada in response to the country’s digital services tax targeting tech companies. He described the move as a “direct and blatant attack on our country.”

Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote:
“Due to this outrageous tax, we are hereby ending all trade discussions with Canada, effective immediately.”

He added that the United States would inform Canada of the tariffs it would be required to pay to continue trade relations within the next seven days.

Canada, home to 41 million people, sends roughly three-quarters of its exports to the United States. The latest jobs report indicates that the tariffs previously imposed by Trump are already impacting the Canadian economy.

Trump had implemented a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, including additional levies on specific sectors such as automobiles, steel, and aluminum. However, some of these duties were temporarily suspended pending negotiations.
